As a grandmother of nine and a mother of five, Vickie Shorts has a lot of experience caring for children of all ages.

After hearing about HopSkipDrive on social media, she became certified as a CareDriver in the Dallas-Forth Worth metro area, where she is thrilled to be using her caregiving skills to give back to her community. 

 

**Where do you live and what market do you drive in?**

I live in Mesquite, Texas, and I drive in the Dallas-Forth Worth area. 

 

**How long have you been driving with HopSkipDrive?**

Since April of 2022. 

 

**What made you decide to become a CareDriver?**

I am very passionate about the protection of our youth, and being a CareDriver is a great way to transport them to school safely and with care. I’m a grandmother so I think of myself as their Granny driver! 

 

**What do you like most about being a CareDriver?** 

 

Making a difference and solving the worries of parents concerning their children’s safety getting to school or appointments.  

 

**Tell us about your caregiving experience. How does it play a role in the work you do as a CareDriver?** 

 

As a mother of five adult children and a grandmother of nine grandchildren, I have experience with all ages from the cradle to adults. Just as I love, protect and keep my children safe, I do the same for the students I transport daily.  

 

**Have you had any special experiences with Riders that have been meaningful? ** 

 

Yes. One day, a student asked me if I ever thought about being a foster parent. I replied no, and then asked why he was asking. He said: “Every time I ride in your car, I feel love. And that’s all we kids need is love.” Then he said: “You would make a good granny foster parent.” I said thank you, and then held back tears as I safely got him to school.

That young man made my day! It lifted my spirits to know that he felt the love I surround myself with daily. 

 

**What are the most important things you gain from being a CareDriver?** 

 

Awareness, compassion and humbleness. 

 

**What advice would you give to someone who is thinking about becoming a CareDriver? ** 

 

Being a CareDriver means you do your part as a driver by following the rules, and you treat Riders as if they’re your very own family. 

 

**What do you tell other people about HopSkipDrive?** 

 

That it’s a great company to represent and be a part of that helps make mobility available to everyone. 

 

**Do you have any advice you think would be useful for other CareDrivers?** 

 

Always keep a positive attitude when dealing with Riders — never engage in negative behavior. Always say please and thank you when asking Riders to refrain from doing something not allowed.

And remember: We are serving, helping and giving back to our communities.
