Meet Safe Ride Support Specialist Yvonne Chambers
Written by Karen Sampson
When Yvonne Chambers first heard about HopSkipDrive on Facebook, her interest was piqued, in large part because of her relevant teaching, counseling, parenting and rideshare driver experience. This background — along with her empathetic nature, critical thinking abilities and communication skills — made her the perfect fit for HopSkipDrive’s Safe Ride Support team.
Where are you located, how long have you worked for HopSkipDrive, and what do you do for the company?
I am currently located in Fort Worth, Texas — borderline Crowley, Texas. I have worked for HopSkipDrive for approximately six months as a Safe Ride Support Specialist.
How did you hear about HopSkipDrive, and what made you want to work here?
I was introduced to HopSkipDrive through Facebook. I immediately wanted to know more about the company based on my experience as a mother, educator and previous driver for rideshare companies. I knew HopSkipDrive would be a great fit for me knowing they provide safe rides for children and allow opportunities for those of who have caregiving or childcare experience.
What is your educational and professional background?
I graduated from The University of Texas at Arlington with my bachelor’s in interdisciplinary studies and child studies, and then completed my master’s degree in school counseling at Lamar University.
I was previously an educator for eight years — I taught third grade for about three years, and second grade for the remainder of my teaching career. I then became a school counselor for four years. I have also driven for Uber and Lyft, and worked as a personal shopper for Instacart.
Lastly, I am the mother of two children, who are 7 and 16 years old.
What are some of the biggest opportunities or positives with the work you do?
The biggest positive is assisting each CareDriver, Rider, caregiver and organizer to get the result of a completed safe ride at the end of the day.
What are some of the most important characteristics you need to be successful in your role?
Definitely being a great problem solver, critical thinker and communicator, as well adaptability, flexibility, empathy and the willingness to learn.
Have you had any special experiences with clients or Riders that stand out in your mind?
Yes, definitely. Caregivers and Riders have expressed their appreciation for the rides and the contributions HopSkipDrive provides, which lead to graduation and having a successful school year. There’s one particular CareDriver that honestly makes my day every time I speak with them, and it just empowers me and affirms that what we are doing matters.
What is your favorite thing about working here?
Honestly, I love working remotely and I enjoy working with our team. I particularly love the social option through different Slack channels.
How important do you think HopSkipDrive’s mission is, and why?
It’s very important because everyone deserves to be, and feel, protected and valued. Breaking down barriers by providing a platform for Riders that assists with transportation does just that and more.
Is there anything about the company culture at HopSkipDrive that is of particular importance to you?
The company is very team and people oriented. This helps to ensure I am completing my job successfully, and gives me a sense of accomplishment and belonging.
Do you have any causes you support through volunteering or other charitable efforts?
I support Brown Girls Do Ballet, St. Jude and other nonprofit organizations that contribute to assisting in improving the lives of those who are treated unjustly.
What are some of your favorite things to do in your spare time, and who do you do them with?
I love spending time outdoors with myself, my kids and with close friends. Trailing, running, hiking, and patio and outdoor eateries are my favorite. Come August, I will definitely be watching football Mondays, Thursdays and Sundays. Can’t wait!
What do you tell other people about HopSkipDrive?
I have told my family and friends that I work for a great company that provides a great service for youth and communities all around.
What advice would you give to someone who may be interested in joining the HopSkipDrive team?
Be yourself and always keep safety first.
Is there anything else you want to share about your experience working at HopSkipDrive?
I absolutely love the culture and atmosphere of HopSkipDrive, even being remote. Everyone is a team player and always willing to lend a helping hand.
