Join us as we learn more about Susan’s journey, from her beginnings as a CareDriver in California to her current service in Woodbridge, Virginia.
What made you decide to become a CareDriver?
A chance to work with kids, and a chance to stop working in a law firm after 30 years.
Tell us about your caregiving experience. How does it play a role in your work as a CareDriver?
I have two grown children of my own, now ages 45 and 48, and [I was] a drum and bugle corps “mom”… volunteer for 12 years. I’ve always enjoyed working with kids.
What are the most important things you gain from being a CareDriver?
Being a “surrogate mom” to riders by encouraging them and being an emotional supporter. Every day is a new experience picking up kids from school — their lives can be so complex!
Have you learned anything surprising from your riders?
I hear a lot about kids’ hopes and dreams, as well as their everyday lives.
What advice would you give to someone considering becoming a CareDriver?
Be prepared to encourage and enjoy great conversations. My riders become “my [HopSkipDrive children].”
Do you have any advice that would be useful for other CareDrivers?
Always listen and share — these kids need and love that. Also, don’t speed, and do take the corners slowly.
How important do you think HopSkipDrive’s mission (to create opportunity for all through mobility) is, and why do you think it’s important?
[HopSkipDrive] provides not only a service to busy parents, but also a safe environment for their kids.
Is there anything else you’d like to share with us about your experience as a CareDriver?
I can’t describe how invaluable my [CareDriver] experience has been for me! I love the work, and I take it very seriously.
