Meet HopSkipDrive CareDriver Sonia Caballeros

Sonia CaballerosSonia Caballeros was looking for part-time work when she heard about HopSkipDrive on social media.

Since becoming certified as a CareDriver in December of 2022, she has come to appreciate the ability to set her own schedule — as well as the opportunity to interact with kids and parents in her community.

Where do you live and what market do you drive in?

I live in Whittier, CA, and I drive in the Los Angeles market.

What made you decide to become a CareDriver?

I needed part-time work and found this wonderful company that helps all kinds of kids and parents. So I signed up, and I love it.

What do you like most about being a CareDriver?

I can make my own schedule, and I can help kids and parents. I don’t have kids myself but I love helping parents and making things a bit easier in their fast and sometimes crazy lives.

Have you had any special experiences with Riders that have been meaningful to you?

I am bilingual (Spanish and English), and I had a Rider who was adopted abroad. When I said good morning, she just looked at me and didn’t say a word so I asked if she spoke English and she said no. I then used my Spanish to ask if she spoke Spanish, and she immediately replied “si”. So I started a conversation, and she was a very nice girl, and very polite. I really enjoy interacting with kids to create a relationship with them.

What would you say is the most important thing you gain from being a CareDriver?

Independence because I can work as much or as little as I want or need to.

Have you learned anything surprising from your Riders?

How important communication is. I have learned that many kids need an adult to talk to about life.

Do you have any advice you think would be useful for other CareDrivers?

Always be friendly to both parents and Riders. You never know how their day started, and maybe your kindness can make a change in their day.

How important do you think HopSkipDrive’s mission (to create opportunity for all through mobility) is, and why?

It’s very important because a lot of parents need assistance with transporting their kids safely with trustable drivers.

Is there anything else you’d like to share about your experience as a CareDriver?

I just want to thank you for this great opportunity!
