The Trauma-Informed Support Team Your Students Deserve

At HopSkipDrive, every interaction with our Safe Ride Support™ team is about providing peace of mind. Whether it’s a rider texting to confirm their CareDriver’s details, a parent checking in for a quick update, or a CareDriver ensuring a smooth handoff, our team is there to keep things moving seamlessly. The people behind these conversations carry an important responsibility, and we believe they deserve tools that make every journey feel effortless and secure.

Earlier this year, we shared new ways we’re enhancing student transportation safety across our platform. One of those key pillars included a partnership with the National Organization for Victim Assistance (NOVA). As the oldest national victim assistance organization in existence, NOVA is widely recognized as the gold standard for crisis intervention and victim advocacy training. Today, we’re proud to announce that our Trust & Safety and Safe Ride Support teams have officially completed this rigorous, all-day certification program.

Why We Partnered with NOVA

Many of the students we serve have experienced a disproportionate number of traumatic events in their lives. When a call comes in to our Trust & Safety or Safe Ride Support teams, whether it’s a CareDriver navigating a complex school pickup line or a rider who has become overwhelmed, our support specialists are the very first point of contact.

We’ve always known that supporting our community requires more than just solving problems. This effort deepens the comprehensive foundation already established for CareDrivers, who have access to specialized resources on de-escalation, neurodivergence, and trauma-informed care. By bringing NOVA-certification to our internal support specialists, we’ve solidified a shared language of safety. Our team is now even better equipped to support a CareDriver through a rider’s unease in real time with total alignment, ensuring a full-person approach that prioritizes emotional well-being for everyone in the vehicle.

“At NOVA, we believe meaningful support extends beyond advocacy alone. HopSkipDrive’s commitment to trauma-informed practices provides added reassurance to parents and caregivers, helping them feel confident that their children are being transported safely and with care. Through our partnership with HopSkipDrive, we are helping strengthen access, safety, and stability for survivors and the professionals who serve them.”

—Colleen Phelan, Associate Director of National Advocacy Leadership Center at National Organization for Victim Advocacy (NOVA)

“In the short time we have on a call during an emergency, building trust is everything. This training gave us the tools to be more than just a voice on the phone; it helped us learn how to be truly relatable and supportive when someone is having their hardest moment.”

A Deep Dive into the Training

Our team recently completed the intensive, tailored deep dive into the NOVA curriculum requiring significant time on prep work and real-world simulations designed to test how they handle pressure. They didn’t just learn theory — they mastered conscious communication, and the ability to build genuine trust in a matter of seconds.

This training builds upon our foundational commitment to care by integrating a trauma-informed lens. By transitioning from understanding frustration to recognizing a person’s broader journey, our team is now even better equipped to provide the nuanced, high-level empathy that has always been at the heart of HopSkipDrive.

“The way I face situations has changed completely. Now I feel more prepared and conscious of what a person is going through and understand that their reactions are something natural. We cannot judge their reactions and we should avoid using phrases that make the person feel uncomfortable, unheard, or invalidated.”

Caring for the Caregivers

Providing a calm, safe environment for students requires a high level of emotional intelligence and steady focus — especially when we are supporting riders who may have experienced trauma in their daily lives. Because our Trust & Safety and Safe Ride Support specialists are dedicated to navigating these sensitive situations with composure, we’ve built emotional resilience directly into our daily operations.

“Learning things like breathing exercises doesn’t just help us stay calm for the person on the line; it helps us take care of ourselves so we can stay focused and ready for the next student who needs us.”
