What is a Rider Assistant?
A Rider Assistant is an experienced caregiver who accompanies students who need extra support during their HopSkipDrive rides, providing one-on-one support that goes beyond transportation. You'll sit alongside the rider, providing comfort, behavioral support, and communication between the family, driver, and school. Your presence transforms a potentially stressful commute into a safe, reassuring experience. This is more than a job, it's a chance to be a trusted presence in a child's day, every single day.
Requirements for Rider Assistants
We set a high bar because the students deserve nothing less. Here’s what we look for in every candidate.
At least 21 years of age with a valid government-issued ID (including driver’s license, U.S. passport, or identification card)*
Caregiving experience with children, especially including kids with special needs, disabilities, or behavioral support requirements
Pass our comprehensive certification, including background check and fingerprinting
Smartphone with the HopSkipDrive app (iOS or Android)
*In Texas, Rider Assistants must have a driver’s license.

You meet the CareDriver at the designated location, ride in the back seat with the rider, and support the rider as needed. Learn more about the Rider Assistant role during a ride.
The Rider Assistant meets the CareDriver at the starting location — usually the rider's school or the drop-off site. Together, they travel to the pickup location to get the rider. The Rider Assistant rides in the back seat with the rider to the drop-off location, then back to the starting location.
If you're already a certified CareDriver, go to the Assist section of the app, tap Get certified, and complete the Rider Assistant Education module to start claiming Assist rides. Learn more about becoming a Rider Assistant.
Tap Assist to view available Rider Assistant rides up to 7 days in advance, review the ride details, then tap Add to Cart to hold it for 5 minutes or Claim Instantly to commit right away. Learn more about adjusting your search preferences.
In the My Rides section, each upcoming ride is labeled either "Rider Assistant" or "CareDriver" at the top of the listing. Learn more about viewing your rides.
You won't be paid if you cancel a ride yourself; if the Ride Organizer or caregiver cancels after you've checked in, you will receive the full estimated fare. Learn more about ride cancelations and fare protection.
You will need a method of transportation to get to and from the designated meeting location, however, you will not need to use a vehicle as a Rider Assistant. The CareDriver is responsible for the vehicle.
