Meet Operations Training Manager Lexie Johnson

Lexie JohnsonLexie Johnson’s innate interest in helping people led her to pursuing a master’s degree in social work. A referral from a previous colleague led her to HopSkipDrive.

With first-hand experience in her own childhood of the transportation challenges lots of kids face, she is grateful to have found a company where she can make a positive impact on the lives of children while learning new things and advancing in her career.

Where are you located, how long have you worked for HopSkipDrive, and what exactly do you do for the company?

I live in Phoenix, Arizona, but I am originally from Southern California. I was first hired in 2019 to be an Operations Associate on HopSkipDrive's CareDriver operations team. In that role, I helped launch and manage the Phoenix and Seattle markets. I did CareDriver programs during the pandemic, and then I was a CareDriver Operations Manager.

Currently, as the Operations Training Manager, I am responsible for developing a training program that sets each specialist on the Safe Ride Support, CareDriver Support, CareDriver operations and Client Support teams — so basically all of our front-line employees — up for success. I also ensure all knowledge base documentation is always up to date and helpful, and develop plans for continuous improvement and training across a couple of departments.

How did you hear about HopSkipDrive, and what made you want to work here?

I was referred by VP of Operations, Michelle McCombs — she was my manager at a previous job. I was super excited to work for HopSkipDrive because it felt like a perfect role for me to combine my professional background and my education.

Can you talk a bit about your background?

I have a master of social work degree — I originally wanted to be a social worker but then I fell into customer service and operations. I have a wide range of professional experience, including work in banking, tech, government and schools.

Have you had any personal experiences in your life that relate to the work we do?

Yes! Growing up, I was a latchkey kid. I started taking public transportation and walking to school on my own when I was in second grade because both of my parents worked long hours. Having to be responsible for getting myself to and from school at that age was challenging.

I love that as a company, we’re able to not only help to make sure Riders can get from point A to point B safely but also remove the worry and responsibility that comes with that.

What is your favorite thing about working at HopSkipDrive?

My favorite thing about working at HopSkipDrive is that I have had supportive managers who have always encouraged me when I have expressed interest in learning something new.

What is the most challenging thing about your job, and the most rewarding?

Something challenging about my role would probably be there is a lot of information and processes I have to keep up with. At the moment, I am in charge of new hire training for five different teams.

The most rewarding part of my job is being one of the first people new hires meet. HopSkipDrive has provided me with access to so many things — leveling up my skills, trying/learning new skills, challenging myself and becoming a people manager. I love that I get to help set the foundation for new hires.

What do you like to do in your free time?

Most recently, I have been teaching myself video editing and filming. I am also trying to get into hiking, which is really popular here in Phoenix despite it getting up to 120 degrees in the summer!

Have you or do you now do any kind of volunteer work?

I volunteer with HandsOn Greater Phoenix, where I do a variety of things including volunteering at schools to help with reading and math, working at the food bank, replenishing community fridges, and helping out on Senior Days.

The volunteering opportunity that I am most proud of is being part of the giant COVID vaccination clinic at the State Farm Stadium. I helped over 200 people register and get through the drive-through clinic.
